Our Story

The Great Eastern Hotel is a family owned and operated hotel located in the Adelaide Hills, just 30 mins from Adelaide’s CBD. The Great Eastern Hotel consists of two Bars, Large Outdoor Decking, Restaurant with exceptional food at great prices, Gaming Lounge and a drive through Bottle Shop. The Great Eastern Hotel prides itself on providing an authentic Country Pub experience with high quality customer service.

The Great Eastern Hotel was built in 1843 and was first licenced in 1854 and has been a popular watering hole for Adelaide Hills locals and day-trippers. Just 10 minutes from Oakbank’s famous racecourse. Legend has it that the first meeting to organise the Great Eastern Steeplechase was held in the hotel so bears its name. A Great Eastern Steeplechase mural in the front bar depicts some of the hotel’s history.

Onkaparinga Racing Club met, the following year the main race of the meeting a steeplechase was named the Great Eastern Steeplechase
